All too soon I waved goodbye as Mike drove away in his rather dirty white van. The moment he was out of sight, I stripped off my clothes to shower and put on something clean. As soon as I wriggled out of my jeans and remembered why I was commando, embarrassment struck yet again. Could I really have left my underwear in Mikeâs house? I imagined him laughing when he found them, but it didnât lessen my mortification as I threw a load of clothes into the washing machine and made a real effort to tidy my house.
I started with the bedroom and picked up every item of clothing, unable to remember which were clean and which Iâd worn. I took them all downstairs and decided to wash the lot. I vacuumed, dusted, put away CDs, books, magazines, and clutter, and changed my bedding. It was likely to take me all day to do the whole house, but I vowed to try to keep things reasonably tidy. After all, now I had a sexy hunk of a man who might want to fuck me on every available surfaceâand the way things were, the only surface with nothing on it was the sofa.
By the time Iâd finished three loads of washing, cleaned and tidied the bathroom, and vacuumed the landing and stairs, I was hot, tired and sweaty, and regretting having a shower before I started. Iâd need another one by the time I finished. I took a break to get something to eat and found that cheese on toast was the only thing I could make. My fridge and cupboards were bare of everything except the very basic essentials, and a dozen microwave dinners in the freezer. I determined to learn to make one or two easy things, like spaghetti bolognaise, or chilli. It would be amazing if Mike came over and I could cook him a meal, instead of ordering takeaway food or giving him something burnt.
After my snack, I started on the living room. Most of the clutter went upstairs to the spare bedroom, and Iâd just finished vacuuming the bare wood floor when I was interrupted by the doorbell. I hurried to answer it, then hovered behind the door, hoping it wasnât Mike come back with my underwear. My hot sweaty face and damp armpits wouldnât present a welcome sight. I crept back to the living room and peered out of the window, but there was no sign of a white van. On the doorstep, I could make out a slim person in a bright blue coat, a mass of ginger hair sticking out from under a red knitted hat. My best friend! I hurried back to the door and flung it open.
âJane!â
âHi. What took you so long?â
âI was tidying some stuff up.â I stood back to let her in.
âTidying? You?â She snorted and began peeling off hat, gloves, scarf, and coat, and piled them into my arms. âI take it your date went well last night, then.
